The Morning Routine of An Average Woman

A few days ago, Forbes came out with an article about the morning routines of 12 fabulous women leaders. These are top of the field women who have probably all done some “leaning in” and know what the third metric is to thrive. The average wake up time, according to the article, is 6:03 am. They never skip breakfast and apparently their morning routines are a part of their “secret sauce.”

Well, it got me thinking about the morning routine of an average woman –  someone who is not a CEO, or an executive, or a TV writer, or a media recognized leader. I want to know the morning routine of the mom next door, or the woman I see running every morning, or the baker who is up at 4 am making the scones I deliciously eat at my local cafe. What about them? What’s their morning routine? What gets them up and going in the morning? So, I thought I would start by sharing my morning routine.

6:00 am – Hear Ninja getting ready for work. Go back to sleep.

6:30 am – Ninja leaves for work. Go back to sleep.

7:10 am – Alarm goes off. I usually snooze it two times. I’ve been trying to move up my wake up time by small increments, but I’m a night owl and I have a hard time in the mornings. Check my phone to see what happened during the night on email, etc.

7:25 am – Ninjette’s alarm goes off. She never turns it off. I usually find her underneath pillows and blankets while the alarm is going off. I have a sneaking suspicion that she might not be a morning person like her dad.

7:30-7:45 am – Pack Ninjette’s lunch and get her moving. She has a chart now that has made the morning routine a bit easier because I don’t have to nag her to brush her teeth, go potty, get dressed, etc. I usually brush her hair and help her get her clothes on.

7:45 am – 8:00 am – Try to get dressed and feed Ninjette breakfast. We are usually always running late and we are still getting dressed. Breakfast always seems like it is on the go, especially since Ninjette likes to take her time with meals. I don’t blame her – it’s hard for me to function in the morning!

8:05 am – Running out the door to make it to school on time. We have about a 0.5 mile walk to school and five year old legs don’t always move so fast when there are so many interesting things to look at.

8:35-8:45 am – This is when I power walk back home or attempt a run. I have to run a 5K at the beginning of December and I think I might die running it. Why is it so hard to run?

9:05-9:15 am – Get back home sometime between this time and try to eat some sort of a breakfast while watching my morning news and my friends on the Today show.

9:45 am – Get on my laptop and see what’s going on and what my calendar looks like. Check email, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and other social media sites. Read blogs and links that I missed from my late night friends. Write, look at job sites, or run errands and take care of household things. Prep any dinner ingredients.

That’s it! What about you? What does your morning routine look like?
