I think about all the people we’ve lost because of COVID - including my own personal loss - and despite my fears, I knew I had to do this. #notthrowingawaymyshot

In the 1950s, a deaf Korean artist, Kim Ki Chang, reimagined Jesus’ life through a Korean cultural lens and painted these images (and more) of Jesus’ life set in a Korean Joseon dynasty context (“The Life of Christ” paintings). I’ve shared his nativity scene paintings before and wanted to share these Holy Week paintings. 운보 김기창’s culturally relevant paintings always move me. He started painting them “during a time of agony suffered by Koreans because of the war.” He had difficulty procuring painting supplies, but he made the 30 paintings in a year. “I was praying for the quick end of the Korean War and peace both to Korean people and to my painful mind when I made brush strokes.” The wartime suffering of his people led Kim Ki Chang to connect to the sufferings of Christ. However, his series of paintings did not end with the crucifixion but with “The Ascension.” He knew the hope of the resurrection.
Jesus knows our suffering, but he does not leave us in it. He did not just die, but he rose again. He bore it all to end it all. He fulfilled and fulfills every promise. And so I know that suffering, though painful, is but for a moment. When Jesus died, it looked like injustice & evil had won, but he overcame and lives. I can face tomorrow because Jesus lives. Even when I’m facing a losing battle, I know I am in a winning war.
